To share location on WhatsApp, you need to go to your friend's inbox, click on the Attachment icon and then click Location. You can send location just like you send photos, videos, documents etc on WhatsApp. That means you don't need any other app for this, because WhatsApp provides the Live Location Sharing option which anyone can use.
Here I will tell you about 3 methods using which you can send your location via WhatsApp.
1. How to Send Current Location on WhatsApp
The Current location does not change, it remains the same. That means wherever you are when you share location on WhatsApp, that same location will be shared. Even if you go to some other area or place, it will not change.
- Open WhatsApp Messenger on your phone, then open the chat of the person you want to share your Current Location with.
- Click on the Attachment Icon and then click Location.
- If using this feature for the first time, it will ask for permission. Click Continue and then Allow.
- Now click on the Send Your Current Location option.
2. How to Send Live Location on WhatsApp
Live Location means Real Time Location, and it keeps changing. Most people use this feature more, because when you share Live Location from one place and go to some other place, it changes. That means wherever you are, that new location starts appearing.
- Open WhatsApp and go to your friend's chat.
- Click Attachment icon and tap on Location.
- Click on Share Live Location option. It will tell you that your real time location will be shared and you can stop it anytime. Click Continue.
- It will now ask you to select Time.
- You will see 15 Minutes, 1 Hour and 8 Hours options. Select for how much time you want to share the location. It will automatically stop sharing after that time.
- Add Comment is optional. You can leave it blank if you don't want to add any message.
- After selecting time, click Send icon.
3. How to Share Location from Maps on WhatsApp
- First make sure Google Maps is installed on your phone. If not, download it from Play Store or directly download using button below and update it if already installed as this location sharing is a new feature.
- Open Google Maps. You will see your location. If not, click on icon above Go as shown in screenshot.
- Note - Your Live Location will only be shared if GPS is ON on your phone. Many phones have GPS option in Settings which needs to be enabled.
- Now your location will appear. To share it with friends or someone, click on 3 lines or menu above and click Sharing.
- On clicking Share, you will see "Let your friends see where you are". Below it click Get Started.
- Now select for how much time you want to share real time location. 1 Hour is pre-selected. You can reduce it by clicking - icon and minimum is 15 minutes. If you want to share for more than 1 hour, click + icon. Maximum is 3 Days.
- After selecting time, you will see options - Select People, Messaging and More. To share with contacts, choose Select People. To send via Message choose Messaging. But since I'm telling how to share via WhatsApp, click More.
- On clicking More, you will see many apps to share Live Location. Click WhatsApp.
- On WhatsApp, you will need to turn on Sharing so your location is shared for the time period you selected and the person you select can view it. Click Turn On.
- Now you will be taken to WhatsApp Chats where you will see all your Contacts & Groups. Click on the person you want to share Live Location with and click right tick mark.
- You will be taken to their chat. Click Send icon.
- You have now shared your Live Location. It will be in a link.
- When your friend clicks on the link, they will be able to see your Locations.
- They can view your real time location until the time you had set. After that time is complete, Location Sharing will automatically turn off.
How to Stop Live Location Sharing on WhatsApp
- To stop location sharing on WhatsApp, go to that person's chat.
- Click on Stop Sharing option.
- It will ask you to confirm once. Click Stop.
Why Share Your Location with Someone
If you are at some place and someone asks where you are, you tell them about that place but they are unable to find you there because there are too many people or the Place is too big, then you can share your location with them. This allows that person to easily find you. Almost everyone uses WhatsApp so you can share your Live Location with them on WhatsApp.
